What is 'Jackhodo'?
Jackhodo, painting of tiger and magpie, is the most iconic type of Korean folk paintings. From palace to commoner's houses, Jackhodo decorated gates of people's houses at the start of lunar year. The pine tree represents the first month of lunar year, and the magpies are considered bringers of good news. Finally, the tiger is the sacred animal that wards off evil spirits. Altogether, Jackhodo is a painting that brings good fortune to the house and prevent bad luck from coming in for entire year. The tiger in Jackhodo is drawn in a way that creates illusion, so that they eyes of the animal looks like as if they are following the viewer. This gives the tiger the ability to chase away evil spirits no matter which direction they are coming in from.
