Investment Casting Process
♦ Engineering Design
- The investment casting process begins with customer provided drawings and specifications.
Based on these specifications, Chunji develops shop drawings with CAD/CAM/CAE. With these drawings, Chunji constructs the injection dies either single or multi-cavity.
♦ Injection and Assembly
- A specially formulated wax is injected into a die to produce the pattern for the part. This pattern is an exact replica of the metal part to be produced.
The individual wax patterns are assembled onto a wax sprue to form a ceramic mold, or tree.
The number of patterns assembled per tree varies dependent upon the size, weight and configuration of a given part.
♦ Shell Building and Dewaxing
- Assembled wax patterns are dipped or "invested" into a ceramic slurry, drained, then coated with fine ceramic sand.
After drying, this process is repeated several times. The finished molds are heated to melt out the pattern wax.
This leaves a ceramic shell cavity of the actual casting shape.
♦ Pre-Heating and Casting
- The molds are fired at 1800 °F to withstand the pressure and temperature of the molten metal being cast.
Molten metal is poured into the pre-heated molds at typically around 3000 °F for steel.
Before casting, every melt is analyzed spectrographically to assure compliance with customer specifications.
♦ Cleaning and Final Processing
- After the poured molds have cooled, the casting’s ceramic shell material is removed using mechanical and chemical cleaning processes.
Gates and runners are removed by cut-off and grinding. Some castings are heat treated to meet required mechanical properties.
♦ Complete-To-Print
- If premium tolerances, surface finish, or machining are required, Chunji can provide complete to print components through secondary operations
Investment casting is optimized for complex components with complex internal details.
The benefits of investment casting is maintaining design integrity, a broad choice of materials, capable of producing a broad range of components in size,
able to produce in tight tolerances and high accuracy, and fine surface finish.
The Vacuum Investment Casting process begins by placing a special mold in a vacuum chamber.
The vacuum then draws the molten material into the mold. Lastly the casting is solidified in an oven and the mold is removed in order to release the final product.
